| Miracles and Healings in Medjugorje |
| Since the apparitions began in 1981, millions of pilgrims of all faiths, from all over the world, have visited Medjugorje on pilgrimage and have left spiritually strengthened and renewed. Countless unbelievers and physically or mentally afflicted, have been converted and healed. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones, to investigate with an open mind and heart the events which are occurring in Medjugorje. Medjugorje Miracles (by prof. dr. Ljudevit Rupcic) Dr. fra Ljudevit Rupcic, OFM From the beginning, the Medjugorje apparitions were accompanied by many unusual phenomena, both in the sky and on the ground, especially by miraculous healings. I myself, with about a thousand pilgrims, experienced one unusual dance of the sun. That manifestation was so unusual and obvious, that everyone without exception classified it as a miracle. None of those present remained indifferent, which I myself was convinced of by questioning the others who were present. The joy, the tears, and the statements of those present strongly confirmed it. From their words, it could be seen that they understood that manifestation as a confirmation of the authenticity of the apparitions, and as an incentive to respond to the Medjugorje messages by accepting them. And that is the real purpose of miracles: to help people believe and live by faith because they stand in the service of the faith and of the salvation of people. Regarding the luminous phenomena in Medjugorje, a professor employed in Vienna, an expert in that field, admitted to me that he studied them in Medjugorje for a week. At the end, he told me: "Science has no answer to these manifestations." Although judgment about miracles does not belong to any natural science nor to science in general, but to theology and faith, nevertheless, the judgment of science is very important because where it leaves off, faith takes over. It is very significant that many events were understood by the faithful as a real miracle. They understood their significance and, whether they experienced them for themselves or through others, they felt themselves obliged to accept the Medjugorje messages as an obligation. It is difficult to say precisely how many of these miraculous events have taken place in regards to the Medjugorje apparitions. However, it is well known that several hundred of them have been reported and attested to. Several of them have been thoroughly examined and scientifically-theologically elaborated, and there is no serious reason whatsoever to doubt their supernatural character. It suffices to mention just a few of them. Mrs. Diana Basile, born October 5, 1940 in Platizza, Cosenza, Italy, suffered from multiple sclerosis, an otherwise incurable disease, from 1972 till May 23, 1984. In spite of the expert help of the professors and doctors at the clinic in Milan, she grew more and more sick. By her own desire she came to Medjugorje and was present during the apparition of Our Lady in a room connected to the Church and was suddenly healed. All of that happened in such a quick and thorough way that on the following day the same woman walked barefoot 12 kilometres from the hotel in Ljubuski, where she spent the night, to the apparition hill in order to thank Our Lady for the healing. Ever since then until today, she has remained well. Upon her return to Milan, the doctors were astonished by her healing and immediately established a medical commission, which was again thoroughly to examine both the previous and present condition of the healed woman. They collected 143 documents and, in the end, 25 professors, head doctors, and other doctors wrote a special book about the disease and the healing in which they stated that Diana Basile indeed did suffer from multiple sclerosis, that for many years she was unsuccessfully treated, but that now she is completely well and that this did not happen by any kind of therapy, nor by any kind of medicine. They, thereby, indicated that the cause of the healing was from a different than scientific source. Another more significant miracle happened to Rita Klaus of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA, a teacher and mother of three children, born January 25, 1940, who for 26 years suffered from multiple sclerosis. She was also one that neither doctors nor medicine were able to help. Reading the book about Medjugorje, Is the Blessed Virgin Appearing in Medjugorje? by Laurentin-Rupcic, she decided to accept Our Lady's messages. And once while she was praying the rosary on May 23, 1984, she felt within herself some unusual warmth. After that, she felt well. And from then till today the patient is completely well and capable of doing all her domestic and school work. There is a solid medical documentation about her sickness and her futile therapy and likewise a professional certification of the doctors on her extraordinary and incomprehensible healing, which is complete and permanent. There are still other healings pertaining to Medjugorje, which took place suddenly and thoroughly. They are more or less expertly examined. But some of them have not at all yet been analysed. It is not ruled out that among them there are some cases just as great as those already analysed. With miracles it is critical that they originate from God and that they serve the faith, but it is not important for them to be "big". It is rather people of good will and open to the truth that will recognize them rather than biased scientists and versatile critics because they often shut themselves within boundaries where a miracle "must not" and "cannot" happen. |

| Medjugorje Miracles This book by: Larry and Mary Sue Eckcan be purchased by going to www.medjugorje.ie Medjugorje Miricles; That’s the title of the new book we’ve compiled and edited. People often say that Medjugorje has no physical healings, like Lourdes. Wrong! We decided to look through all 55 of our issues and see if we had enough physical healings to fill a book. We had too many. Like a magazine, a book is done in a format of so many pages and we decided to keep the cost down and go for about 200 pages. We chose enough stories to fit into that number. We also added a sixteen page, full color section so readers can see the people who are sharing their story. Some of the stories we included are incredible healing stories, like Colleen Willard’s, Artie Boyle’s, and Jerry Drumm’s. But there are other Medjugorje Miracles, like Loretta Young and her broken foot. She walked all over Medjugorje on it without pain, learning how badly it was broken only when she arrived home and had it x-rayed. |

Nov. 12, 2004 — While many cancer survivors have overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, Arthur Boyle says his story is nothing short of miraculous. The Boston man's fight began when he was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney. The situation became desperate when doctors realized the cancer had spread to his lungs. "When I was rediagnosed, there was a tremendous depression and it felt like a death sentence," Boyle said on ABC News' "Good Morning America." Boyle, the father of 13 children, said he could not imagine not being around to coach his kids' hockey games, see their smiles or grow old with his beloved wife of 30 years. Boyle, who is Catholic, says his faith was severely tested, but he continued to pray for a miracle that would save him. As he hoped and prayed for a cure, Boyle decided it was time to set out on a spiritual journey to a mystical place he had wondered about for many years. A Pilgrimage to Medjugorje Motivated by faith and a determination to live, Boyle made the journey to Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a place where many believe miracles have occured. Medjugorje became a popular destination for pilgrims more than two decades ago, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared there before six children. Boyle said he believes the journey there saved his life. "It was over in Medjugorje where the depression lifted. And I believe I was healed," he said. When Boyle returned home, a CAT scan showed that one nodule on his lung had disappeared and two others had shrunk to an insignificant size. His physician, Dr. Francis McGovern of Massachusetts General Hospital, says the sudden change was certainly uncommon. "He has not received any other additional treatment. At this time we consider him without any evidence of cancer," McGovern said. Boyle says he believes the spritual healing he received in Medjugorje allowed for the physical healing. "I'm not a theologian. I'm not a priest. But I do know that forgivenes and confession are very powerful tools," he said. Boyle isn't alone in his belief that Medjugorje is a holy site. Some pilgrims have said they've witnessed rosary beads change color at Medjugorje. Others have said the spot smells of roses even when flowers aren't in sight. Some even say the sun looks like a pulsating heart when you stare at it from Medjugorje. Many pilgrims say they believe these alleged episodes are all signs from the mother of Jesus. Believers say the signs began in 1981, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before six children of Medjugorje. Although that first sighting was reported 23 years ago, Ivan Dragicevic, who was one of those children, recalls it vividly. "When we approached her she placed her hands over our heads and her first words were, 'My children, I am with you. I'm your mother. Don't be afraid of anything. I will protect you,'" he said. Dragicevic says he believes his calling — spreading the word of the Virgin Mary and Jesus — began on that unforgettable day. And he says the Virgin has appeared before him many times since. "Messages of fast and penance, firm faith, love, forgiveness and messages of hope. These are the most important messages," Dragicevic said. Boyle says he, like Dragicevic, is a believer for life. "I'm not sure why I was healed, but I am grateful," Boyle said. "Some people are skeptical but all they have to do is look at me. I'm still here." |

In the message of April 25, 2001, Our Lady said: Little children, prayer works miracles. The concept of a miracle coming from God is for some Christians an idea belonging to the past, while others run after false miracles. These two opposite positions have the same origin: the thought that a miracle is reducible to a challenge to natural laws, forgetting its role of a sign accessible to every man. The Bible recognizes everywhere the hand of God who manifests His power and His love. The created universe is “marvellous” (Psalm 89,6) and a “sign” (Psalm 36), just as special interventions of God in the history, renewing the creation (Numbers 16,30; Isaiah 65,18). The Bible invites the faithful to what is essential, and it is the religious significance of facts. Miracles in the Old Testament In the Old Testament, miracles happen in the important moments of the history of the chosen people: they are linked to Moses and his successor Joshua at the time of the foundation of the people of God and their placement into the Promised Land. They happened to Eliah as well as to his disciple Elisha, who renewed the Covenant concluded by Moses. For men with open hearts, miracles always awaken and strengthen faith, trust, gratitude, humility, obedience, hope and the fear of God. (Psalm 105/104,5). For those who, like Pharao, expected nothing from an unknown God, they provoked the contrary effect (Exodus 7,13). The entire Israel nation admired the greatness of the faith of Abrahan who obtained what was humanly impossible: the birth of an offspring (Genesis 15,6; Romans 4,18-22). Miracles in the life of Jesus By the miracles He did, Jesus confirmed the Good News and showed that in His person the announced messianic kingdom had arrived. He forgave sins (Mark 2,5-12), He was greater than the Sabbath (Mark 3,4; Luke 13,15), He announced His Messianic kingdom (Matthew 14,33; John 1,49), He was sent by the Father (John 10,36), He demanded faith in Him (Matthew 8,10-13; 15,28). When He raises Lazarus, Jesus invokes the Father, Jesus prays, knowing that the Father will hear Him: “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” (John 11,41-42) The Good News of the Kingdom preached by Jesus and incarnated in His person had to be accepted through conversion and faith (Mark 1,15). John’s Gospel spoke about “signs” which goal was to let Jesus be recognized as sent by God (John 3,2; 9,16; 10,36), as a prophet (John 4,19), Christ (John 7,31), Son of Man (John 9,35-38). Those who saw “signs” (John 6,36; 7,3; 15,24) and refused to believe (John 7,5; 12,37) had no excuse (John 9,41; 15,24). If many rejected the “witness” of signs (John 5,36), it is because they were blinded (9,39; 12,40) by a spiritual numbness, pride, jealousy or false prudence (6,15-26; 5,16; 7,49-52; 9,16; 12,11; 11,47). They knew neither abandonment nor openness to God, and made Jesus, powerless (Matthew 13,58). How could they have recognized “His signs of times” (Matthew 16,3) if they sought signs only in order to test Jesus (Mathew 16,1) and His miracles attributed rather to the demon, than to have recognized He as a supernatural power (Mark 3,22.29)? For closed hearts that do not want to hear the Word, His signs are incomprehensible. To this generation “no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah” (Matthew 12,39), said Jesus, and gave a rendezvous to his opposites the day of His Resurrection. The Resurrection was the most brilliant sign, but also the easiest to be denied, since the possibilities of verifying were only indirect: the empty tomb, apparitions to some (Matthew 28,13; Luke 24,11). The main support of the faith is its’ principal test. In the Church After the Resurrection, the Ascension and the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Jesus remained forever with His disciples, and they also worked signs He did (Acts of the Apostles 3,1): Jesus gave them the power and ordered them to do it. (Mark 16,17; Matthew 10,8). The miracles manifest the quality of those who are sent: their steadfastness (2 Corinthians 12,12), sureness and indifference (1 Thessalonians 2,2-12). This is how the true and the false prophets can be distinguished (Acts 8,9-24; 13,4-12). Everything comes form the power of the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 1,5; 1 Corinthians 2,4; Romans 15,19). Even today this language remains incomprehensible for hearts closed and proud, but is accepted by those who know that “nothing is impossible for God” (Genesis 18,14 = Luke 1,37). In Medjugorje I had an experience that seemed to me to be a very great miracle. It was a miracle of reconciliation, of the changing and healing of hearts and I find this a more amazing thing than physical healing or material signs. The story began many years ago when I was living in a different part of the country. My parish was large and lively, I enjoyed playing my part in it and regarded it as a great privilege. Unfortunately there was a major problem in that I did not get on at all well with the parish priest, which made the work I was doing more and more difficult. Eventually things came to a head and I was excluded completely from any participation in parish life or activities. I continued to go to mass, of course, that could not be prevented, but my priest would not speak to me or acknowledge my presence if we happened to meet. It was very upsetting and things were difficult for quite a long time. I bided my time, determined to let God sort this situation out, and shortly before I moved away we did have something of a reconciliation. At least we were speaking! In September this year I went to Medjugorje and on the second day I was there I was walking alone behind St James church when I happened to fall into conversation with another solitary lady. As we exchanged details she told me that a relative of hers who was a priest in the part of the country where I was living previously was with her in Medjugorje, she asked if I knew him, and gave me the name of my old parish priest. I admit that as I left her I felt very shaken by this news. It was obvious that this had not been a chance meeting, there were far too many people in Medjugorje for this meeting of two complete strangers not to have been engineered by the Lord and the only reason that I could think of is that he wanted the priest and I to meet. The following morning after the English mass we did meet. I had left the church by the side door and as I stood outside I saw him approaching and to my surprise, instead of the trepidation and doubts I had expected to feel I felt a surge of pure joy and delight at seeing him. Even more surprisingly, from the expression on his face as he caught sight of me he felt the same! We ran into each others arms and hugged. “I can't believe this,” he exclaimed, “but I'm really pleased to see you!” There was nothing feigned or forced about this, the reconciliation was heartfelt and joyful and it did not come from us, it came from God, our loving Father, who wants only love between his children. Later I thought that this is what it will be like when we get to Heaven. We will see all these people that we did not get on with on earth and find ourselves crying out from the heart, “I’m so pleased to see you!” |
Gerry Delaney-Boyle and his wife Kitty travelled to Medjugorje for the first time in October 2005, as part of Anne Molloy’s pilgrimage group from Manchester. Here Gerry relates his life-changing experience and healing of heart and body. I must begin with a short medical lesson without which some of what follows will not make sense. Osteo-arthritis is an unpleasant and very invasive condition. Medication is available, but can have unfortunate side effects, i.e. it can activate one or more of the many forms of cancer. It is very painful, very uncomfortable condition, though happily hidden. Over a period of 20 years this condition became ever more invasive in my body, so much so that to get off public transport, I found it easier to alight backwards. This condition reduces freedom of movement and, together with the constant effort given to pain management, does not, as in my case, make one a warm, cuddly, teddy bear. Far from it; consequently and sadly, people tend to avoid one’s company. On Wednesday, October 12, we flew out from Manchester airport en-route to Medjugorje. Due to an incident at the airport, of which we were unaware of at the time, our flight departure was delayed over an hour, and we arrived at Split airport in Croatia at midnight local time. From there we were bussed to Medjugorje, arriving at 3.00am. Late the following morning our group was taken to the foot of Apparition Hill to see Vicka, one of the visionaries, and hear her speak about Our Lady and the messages. That evening I went to confession, of which I had felt in great need of for a long time. During the evening dinner, our guide advised us that if the weather was suitable we would climb Mt Podbrdo on Friday. When the next day came the weather was good so we took taxi to the base of Apparition Hill. How I managed to climb the hill, I do not know, but when I eventually reached the top I could barely stand, and worse, had great difficulty in getting one breath past another. To say that I was in a mess would be to greatly understate my condition, as many who were near me would testify, including members of my own pilgrimage group. I had gone to Medjugorje determined not to ask of Our Blessed Mother anything for myself, with one exception: only that I should love God better. For my wife (my Dove) and for my children, I had a list of needs, several volumes long. After making my obedience to Our Blessed Lady I began to make my way down the hillside. People of many nationalities offered assistance, but I refused; not ungratefully, but as I tried to explain, Our Lady had invited me up the hill and it was she who would see me safely down. Such arrogance! Each evening at 5.00pm there is the recitation of the Rosary (two mysteries), followed by Mass at 6.00pm. That Friday evening we attended St James and during the lull between the end of the Rosary and the beginning of Mass I was taken with the most horrendous pain in my right leg, which started just below my groin and ended just above my ankle. So horrendous was the pain that I though it was probably a thrombosis brought about by my time on the hill that afternoon. I cannot begin to describe the pain, but horrendous doesn’t come close. How I managed not to scream out in the crowded church I will never know. But after several minutes the pain began to diminish and then disappeared. When we got up the next morning I knew there was something amiss but I couldn’t place what. So my wife and I had our breakfast, then went to the Blessed Sacrament chapel to say our morning prayers and have some quiet time. Approaching 9.00am we made ready to go to St James church close by to secure places for the 10.00am English-speaking Mass. It was as I took my first step on the ramp that I suddenly realised I was without pain for the first time in close to 20 years. Not only that but I also had freedom of bodily movement. For two days I walked around as though in a dream, waiting for and expecting the pain and discomfort to come flooding back, until I realised just how insulting this was to Our Lady. Absurd as it may sound, it was as though a long and intimate friendship had ended. On Sunday afternoon we went to climb the second of the two hills, Cross Mountain (Mt Krizevac). I am 71 years, not old by any means in this day and age. But from a condition of being hardly able to walk up one hill, finding great difficulty in stepping of buses and having restricted movement, I was able to run up the mountain when others were walking, some with great difficulty. There were in excess of 50 people who can vouch that they saw saw me do this. I did it as a public than you to Our Blessed Lady and the Sacred Heart, for what they had done for me; not, as some may have imagined, to impress anyone. For me, between each of the Stations of the Cross, there were only three people: myself, Our Lady and the Sacred Heart! As I write this account these weeks have been the best I have ever known, but also some of the most difficult as I try to come to terms with what Our Lady and the Sacred Heart has done for me. It is not only the physical healing. Far more important has been the impact of the inner healing, the change, call it what you will, that has happened within me. I cannot remember ever in my entire life having such a feeling or wellbeing and inner peace. Nor do I have the words to express the gratitude I feel towards Our Lady and the Sacred Heart, all day, every day. On the Thursday following our return home, we were getting ready to go to church for Exposition. My wife, searching through her cupboard for a garment, spoke to me. I was on the landing and answered. It was then I had a heart-stopping moment when I realised what had happened. I answered my wife without thinking and without my hearing aid which I had worn every day for the past three years. Why did I receive such a generous gift when there are so many others more deserving? I don’t know, it’s not my place to ask. But the more I consider what has happened, the more I believe the real miracle will be in the rest of my life. |
Reported in Spirit Daily.com online newspaper. A new book by a medical writer says that more than 400 healings have been recorded at the apparition site of Medjugorje in former Yugoslavia -- from the healing of bone spurs and deafness to cancer remission and recovery from severe brain damage. The book, A Place of Healing, by Connecticut medical writer John Dinolfo, documents several dramatic cures, including the case of a boy healed of spina bifida after his grandmother placed a photograph of him on the altar at St. James Church in the remote village. " He leads a normal life and very active life," writes Dinolfo of the boy today, "without symptoms of spina bifida" (a deformity in the spine that can result in extensive neurological disabilities). The figure of 400 represents only those cases logged at the parish. Many others have gone unreported. But such cases are often crucial to the final acceptance of an apparition and may well figure into the drama of Medjugorje -- where controversy still rages over authenticity of the most publicized apparitions since Fatima. Dinolfo recounts the story of Megan McMahon, a child from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, who was born with a potentially deadly eye cancer called bilateral retinoblastoma and was taken to Medjugorje in 1987 - where Megan, by then three, reportedly saw the Virgin herself. "Megan was at the one end of the pew, and her mother Jeannie knelt in the center aisle, facing the front," recounts Dinolfo. " Seer Marija Pavlovic and others were in a room in the balcony of the church. As Jeannie continued to pray, she was unaware that the nightly apparition had started in the balcony room. Suddenly Megan called out, 'Mommy, is that the Blessed Mother?'... Then Megan, with outstretched arms, began to say loudly, in a sing-song voice, 'I love you Blessed Mother. I want to kiss and hug you.'" So striking was the occurrence that those around the girl began to weep. When asked later what she saw, the girl also mentioned "the big angel," the color blue, and three or four "baby angels." When the girl recovered, according to Dinolfo, her surgeon at Philadelphia's Wills Eye Hospital expressed belief that the force of prayer had "definitely" been at work. Other cures are legion. We recently reported the case of Art Boyle - a Boston businessman who had cancer but no longer needed surgery when he returned from Medjugorje. While the figure of recorded cases may be around 400, there are almost surely thousands of others among the estimated 23 million who had visited by the fall of 2000. "According to the Franciscan priests of Medjugorje, countless healings of depression, suicidal tendencies, and other severe mood disorders have been reported in Medjugorje," says the book, being printed by the Ave Maria Centre of Peace in Toronto and distributed by Saint Andrew Publications in Pennsylvania. |
